Enlisted Ranks
E-1 Private- PVT
A soldier who has completed Basic Training. Primary role is to carry out orders issued to them to the best of his/her ability.
E-2 Army Private 2- PVT2/Marine Private First Class
A soldier who has completed Basic Training. Primary role is to carry out orders issued to them to the best of his/her ability.
E-3 Army Private First Class- PFC/Marine Lance Corporal
PVT2s are promoted to this level after 2 weeks by request of supervisor. Individual can begin and complete Basic Combat Training at this level with experience or prior military training. Carries out orders issued to them to the best of his/her ability.
E-4 Army Specialist- SPC/Marine Corporal
Can manage other enlisted soldiers of lower rank. Has served a minimum of a month and attended a MOS Training class to earn this promotion.
E-4 Army Corporal- CPL/Marine Corporal
The base of the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) ranks, CPLs serve as team leader of Fire Teams, like SGTs, they are responsible for individual training, discipline, and skill of the soldiers.
E-5 Sergeant- SGT
Typically commands a squad. Considered to have the greatest impact on soldiers, because SGTs oversee them in their daily tasks. In short, SGTs set an example and the standard for lower ranks to look up to, and live up to.
E-6 Staff Sergeant- SSGT
Also commands a squad. Often has one or more SGTs under their leadership. Responsible for developing, maintaining and utilizing the full range of his soldiers' potential.
E-7 Army Sergeant First Class- SFC/Marine Gunnery Sergeant- GSGT
Key assistant and advisor to the platoon leader. Generally has 2 months experience and puts it to use by making quick, accurate decisions in the best interests of the soldiers and the USR.
E-8 Master Sergeant- MSGT
Not charged with all the leadership responsibilities of a 1SGT, but expected to dispatch leadership and other duties with the same professionalism.

Principal NCO and life-blood of the company: the provider, disciplinarian and wise counselor. Instructs other SGTs, advises the CO of the company and helps train all enlisted soldiers. Assists Officers at the company level.
E-9 Army Sergeant Major- SGTM/Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant- MGS
Army SGTMs/Marine MGSs experience and abilities are equal to that of the Army CSM/Marine SGTM, but the sphere of influence regarding leadership is generally limited to those directly under his charge. Has served a minimum of 3 months to earn Army SGTM/Marine MGS.
E-9 Army Command Sergeant Major- CSM/ Marine Sergeant Major- SGTM
Functioning without supervision, a Army CSM’s/Marine SGTMs counsel is expected to be calm, settled and accurate—with unflagging enthusiasm. Supplies recommendations to the commander and staff, and carries out policies and standards on the performance, training, discipline and conduct of enlisted personnel.
Officer Ranks
O-1 Second Lieutenant- 2LT
Typically the entry-level rank for most Commissioned Officers. Leads platoon-size elements consisting of the platoon SGT and two or more squads.

As a senior Lieutenant, they are often selected to be the Executive Officer of a company. Has served a minimum of 4 months to earn 1LT.
O-3 Captain- CAPT
Commands and controls a company, together with a principal NCO assistant. Instructs skills at Basic Training and Basic Combat Training.
O-4 Major- MAJ
Serves as a primary Staff Officer for the USR Military and task force command regarding personnel, logistical and operational missions.
O-5 Lieutenant Colonel- LTC
LTCs lead a Battalion with a Major as a EO of the Battalion. Typically reports anything urgent to higher officers and makes sure training is done correctly. Has served a minimum of 5 months of service to earn LTC.
O-6 Colonel
Army COLs lead a Brigade and Marine COLs lead a Regiment and can call for meetings and training at any time with permission from superiors.
O-7 Brigadier General- BGEN
Serves as Deputy Commander to the commanding general for the Army or Marine Corps. Assists in overseeing the staff's planning and coordination of a mission. Has served a minimum of 6 months of service to earn BGEN.
O-8 Major General- MGEN
Major General is a two-star General Officer who usually commands a division. Has served a minimum of 7 months of service to earn MGEN.
O-9 Lieutenant General- LTG
Lieutenant General is a three-star General Officer who commands a corps. Has served a minimum of 8 months of service to earn LTG.
O-10 General- GEN
General is a four-star General Officer rank, and the highest rank attainable by a Army or Marine Officer. Has served a minimum of 1 year of service to earn GEN.
Navy Rank Roles/Responsibilities
